Top 100 has passed through six venues in Brighton. In May 2003 we started at The Full Moon on Boyces St. but had to leave when the owners realised they’d neglected to sign the lease. In September 2003 we moved just round the corner to the Black Lion which was great in that it had a wicked soundsystem, bags of room and even a mini-dancefloor in front of the decks; but not so great in that it was located right in the centre of Brighton and would invariably fill up with hen nights and shirted men, who, for some reason, would take offence to Plastikman’s ‘Spastik’ going full tilt at half ten. Honestly, some people?
...So we moved to the Sidewinder up in Kemp Town – a much friendlier, much more atmospheric boozer and were happy there for almost two and a half years. It was ALL GOOD until the licensing laws changed to allow drinking till 2AM and for a while after that is was ALL BLOODY AMAZING. Too good to be true perhaps and the Sidewinder being a pub and not a club it wasnt long before the pubs neighbours began to complain about Plastikmans Spastik going full tilt at half one. Bit by bit the sound system was chipped away at almost to the point where it didnt really seem fair to put DJs on. So we moved. Things went full circle sort of and we were back in a bar run by the good people that set us off in the first place. We loved the Cosmo Bar. All the gear worked, the soundsystem rocked, the staff were lovely and it was like having our very own bar, to be honest. Great stuff.
And then we moved to The Fortune of War which was...nautical.
And then we moved to The Globe in Middle Street, just off the seafront, in Brighton, obviously, which is FANTASTIC and we're all VERY HAPPY : ) It's got 4 big fans that move back and forward on a motor that goes round and round. Now you don't see that every day! It's also got nice bar staff, tasty beer and a manager who cares. What's not to like? Did I mention the fans?
But things change and apparently that's as good as a holiday though I'm not convinced. In any case another change of venue - To The Thomas Kemp. Now this feels like full circle and back to our roots at the same time. The Thomas Kemp used to be Polar Bar East, it's big and friendly and spacious and it's in Kemptown, kind of like the Sidewinder but without the noise complaints (we hope).
And again we up roots and move house. Back into town again, and we couldn't be much more central, home is now The Grand Central, right beside Brighton train station!
So, come and join us in our plush new place. We promise to have interesting people playing their favourite tunes, that's what we do!
